WHAT TO BRING

In addition to your painting supplies, it is suggested that you bring the following with you to the event. Comfortable clothing and good walking shoes, notebook/sketchbook, water, camera, lawn chair, insect repellent, sunscreen, painting apron if desired, and a hat. Optional: umbrella and stakes to hold your easel.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING

The painting blocks on the schedule include travel time to the locations. You will rendezvous with one of the faculty teams (with 2-3 instructors) at a specific location in beautiful Heber valley. You will paint at 3 gorgeous fall locations over the 3 days. At least one faculty member of each team will demonstrate en plein air for those who wish to watch a demonstration, and the other faculty members will coach those who want to set up and paint. If you wish to have coaching from one of the faculty members while on site, just let them know.

ART SUPPLIES

There are numerous supplies and equipment and a wide variety of painting approaches. PAPU artist and instructor Bonnie Posselli and Tom Howard have given us her list for you to use as a guide if you wish. Bonnie's list is focused on oil painting. Bonnie is a veteran painting teacher from Salt Lake City. Tom Howard, teaches as Salt Lake Community College. His list is for watercolor.

NOVICE PAINTERS

The novice group will gather for special training and move from team to team. Novice painters will learn together because the coaching will be keyed to your specific needs. If you prefer to paint with intermediate and advanced painters, you are welcome to. However, we recommend the novice group for ease of learning. Rob Adamson and Tom Howard will demonstrate for the novice painter on the first field session and they will rotate locations each session.

WATERCOLOR

Tom Howard and Becky Hartvigsen will lead this specialized group of watercolorists to the fields to paint en plein air. You may opt to focus exclusively with this group and medium if you wish. Tom Howard's watercolor supply list.

WET PAINT SALE & EXHIBIT - PREPARATION AND RULES

Invite your art buyers to this Saturday Art Sale! Two pieces maximum per participant. Choose your best two that were painted during this event. No pieces larger than 18x24, not including mat and frame. Your plein air artwork must be framed and ready for hanging as shown in the schedule above. There will be a frame vendor available on site during the event. Please be sure to purchase any frames you will need from them before 6:00 pm on Friday.

You will need to fill out an “Art Sign-In Sheet & Release Form” when you submit your pieces. Please remember to include sales tax and the 20% commission when establishing a price for your artwork.

Sale and Exhibit Hours for participants: Saturday, Sept. 17 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

At least 90% of the artwork must be produced outdoors in the spirit of plein air.

The Midway Art Association retains 20% of all sales of artwork exhibited during the retreat.**

**All sales either inside or outside the Town Hall must be processed through the Midway Art Association sales desk.**

Checks for the sale of artwork will be mailed to artists shortly after the event. Additionally, any sale made either by agreement with the buyer during the show or through arrangements as a follow up to the show are subject to the same agreement.

The PAU Committee reserves the right to jury out any subject matter unsuitable for the event and to adjust the number of works shown in the event according to available space.

Also on Saturday, the 17th, attendees and faculty are invited to paint out-of-doors on the lawn and around the Town Hall using any appropriate subject matter and reference. Sorry no nudes. This is a great time to meet the art-loving public in Midway, get exposure for your art or just hang out with fellow artists and just enjoy yourself in this relaxed atmosphere. It is an opportunity to sell, hand out cards, make new friends and educate admiring friends to the marvelous tradition of plein air painting. Paint at any or all of the suggested painting times: 10-12noon; 12noon – 2pm; 2-4pm
